if you buy an xbox 360 on ebay you should make sure it is made before july 1st to be on the safe side if it has the over heating problem you should use the fan like that other guy said or turn it off for 30mins when it over heats
References :
You shouldn't trust eBay for a gaming system. eBay is not 100% reliable. You should just go to a store like Gamestop or EB Games and get a gaming system there.
References :
Unfortunately they are barely fixing this problem and it is unclear yet which 360's are the new kind. I still have my original 360 I was one of the first ones to purchase the first 360s that came out and it is still working. Since I purchased my 360 I noticed my Xbox did get very warm after a while of playing, so what I did was I bought a small fan put in the back of the console and I turn it on every time I play and till now my xbox hasnt given me any problems.
References :
The newer 360 are supposed to have a better heat sink, so there should be less overheating.

But if you want to take an extra precaution, wait until MS uses the 65 nm chip, which is supposed to run cooler than the 90 nm chip, so that further reduces the heat.
References :
No need to buy extended warranties...Microsoft extended the warranties on ALL 360's to 3 years.
References :
microsoft extended the warranty of 360's to 3 years to cover this problem so you are somewhat protected in that area. Just ask the selling before buying how long he has had the 360 or to read the manufacturing date on the console. THere are no visual differences between the 360's to determine which ones have issues and which ones don't. Good Luck!
References :
I would buy it at a store. Trust me, they have NOT yet fixed the problem. I'm on my 3rd Xbox 360 right now (due to the red ring of death!). It's quite frustrating. I even invested in the extended warrant ($60) at Best Buy.
References :
Gamer

Dude just buy the 360 at a store. I have it and it never did that (the light) unless you did not plug it in right.
